ProYo

ProYo: This is the first Mommy vs. Tween write up!

Sometimes, your children are the ones that decided what you write about. The first time we encountered ProYo was at the Gluten Free Allergy Friendly Expo in the fall of 2016.  There were over a hundred vendors and it was pretty overwhelming.  I questioned whether I could cover all the vendors in a day.  I decided to simply work my way from the right side over.  My tween daughter was with me and of course decided that she wanted to start from the left side over. Even though she was with her dad, I kept on looking for her.  At one point, I saw she was at the ProYo booth for 30 minutes!  “What in the world?” I thought to myself.  I went over and she had this big smile on her face….”MOM!!!!! You’ve got to try this!  It’s like ice cream.” She also has food allergies, but dairy is NOT one of them.  I laughed with relief and chagrin… my oldest child is an absolute ice cream junkie!

I looked at the ProYo flyer on the display table: IMG_6449 (1).jpg

  • 20g of Protein per Serving
  • 3g of Fiber per Serving
  • 140 Calories
  • Soy Free
  • GMO Free
  • Certified Gluten Free
  • Non-rBST & non-RBGH milk with Cultured Probiotic Yogurt

To be honest, this is an impressive list.  I am a runner and over the years I must have gone through over 50 different brands of protein products. Naturally, my first question will be “How does it taste?”  I had already gone through 50 gluten free booths and not all of the products were tasty.  In fact, I can probably tell you where all the trash cans were located in each aisle.  My tween grabbed another sample and handed it to me. “Mom try this one…its Vanilla Bean…you’ll like this one!”  I took one bite of the sample and it was wonderful.  It really was.  I was waiting for that nasty grit that you get after eating anything with 20g of protein with fiber, but there was none!  The texture was smooth and creamy.  It was a bit unreal.  I double checked the ingredients on the containers themselves to make sure it wasn’t loaded with sugar or other items.  Nope, there is only 9g of sugar and no artificial colors or preservatives.  It tasted good.  I could see why she has been stalking this booth the whole morning!

Overall ProYo Feedback

IMG_6452.jpg
Mommy: I tried all 4 flavors.  My favorite is the dutch chocolate and the vanilla bean!  I found  these 2 flavors to taste the most like ice cream.  After all, how can you fault me for liking ice cream!  (I guess that’s where my kid gets it from).  I usually do a protein shake after a long run, but this is a good alternative treat.  This is also convenient when you don’t have time to get all the ingredients together and blend them into a shake, and the best part… there is no clean up!

Tween: Mom gave me 4 flavors to try and my favorite flavor is the dutch chocolate.  I like that ProYo is a great source of protein.  It’s great for recovery after my 2hr  swim team practice. Normally, after swim practice I make myself a chocolate recovery shake, but with ProYo I can just grab one and eat it up.  Mom is always telling me to eat healthier.  Now, whenever I want ice cream I grab the chocolate ProYo.  The only problem is that mom won’t let me put sprinkles on it, can someone come up with a protein sprinkle?

Neapolitan ProYo-sicle Recipe:

IMG_6445.jpg

My tween wants to have an “End of the Season” gathering with all her swim friends after their last practice. We decided that we are going to make these frozen dessert treats…Neapolitan ProYo-sicles!

Ingredients:

  • 1 tube of dutch chocolate ProYo
  • 1 tube of vanilla bean ProYo
  • 1 tube of blueberry pomegranate ProYo
  • 1 cup of your favorite gluten free dark chocolate chips
  • 1 tsp of organic coconut oil

Supplies:

  • 2 plates that you can freeze.IMG_6446.jpg
  • 6 popsicle (or lollipop) sticks
  • a sharp knife
  • nonstick pan
  • silicone spatula
  • measuring cups and spoons
  • muffin tray with parchment paper liner
  • a bowl deep enough to dip your popsicle in.
  • spoons for stirring and drizzling

Directions:

  1. Line 6 wells in the muffin tray with parchment cupcake liners.
  2. Place the muffin tray and the 2 plates in the freezer for 20 minutes.
  3. Take one of the plates, the muffin tray and one tube of ProYo.
  4. Unwrap the ProYo and slice the ProYo to make disks about a 1/2 in. thick (Use the cold plate as a cutting board. We are essentially working with an ice cream…so move fast and only use cold a surface.
  5. Layer the ProYo disks into the 6 wells of the muffin tray and pop it into the freezer right away.
  6. Repeat step 4 and 5 with the other 2 flavors…remember only take one tube out to work with at a time.
  7. Save the tail end of ProYo that didn’t shape into a disk to eat or make into a smoothie later.
  8. After I layer on the last flavor of the ProYo, my tween quickly inserted the lollipop stick in the center of the ProYo stack. We then placed the muffin tray into the freezer for another 20 minutes.
  9. While the muffin tray is in the freezer, place the chocolate and the coconut oil in the nonstick pan.
  10. Over low heat, melt the chocolate in the pan… keep stirring the chocolate with the spatula.
  11. When the chocolate looks to be about 90% melted with a few lumps, turn off the flame and move the pan off the stove.
  12. Keep stirring the chocolate, the pan is still hot and will continue to melt the chocolate. You can stop stirring when the chocolate is melted smooth.
  13. Pour the chocolate into your deep bowl and give it another stir.
  14. Take out the 2nd plate from the freezer and place a sheet of parchment paper on it.
  15. Remove one ProYo-sicle at a time from the freezer and place it on the cold plate.
  16. Tip the bowl and swirl the popsicle in it. After you coat each ProYo-sicle, place it back on the cold muffin tray in the freezer.
  17. Leave the ProYo-sicle in the freezer till the chocolate sets… this will take about 10 minutes.
  18. Enjoy!img_6447
