Desert Essence Professional Hair Care

All four of my children are competitive swimmers in the pool and the lake. This means that their hair is constantly exposed to the chlorine and the sun.  Even with a swim cap, there is bleaching and breakage of their delicate hair.  Many of the swimmer shampoos that we come across either contains gluten, parabens, sulfates, silicones or propylene glycol. What we needed was something that would strip down the residuals from swimming, and nourish the hair to keep from breaking.  When I was given the opportunity to try the Desert Essence Anti-Breakage line, I wondered how it would stand up to swimmer hair.

The Desert Essence Anti-Breakage line consists of professional grade shampoo, conditioner and hair mask. These products contain jojoba, coconut oils, aloe and saw palmetto to smooth hair follicles as it fortifies, and revitalizes hair strands to minimize breakage. The Anti-Breakage line are also infused with a formula containing Biotin, as well as Keratin and Pro-Vitamin B5 which helps reduce breakage by up to 61%. These salon-quality products are also gluten free, sulfate free, nitrate free, paraben free AND does not contain artificial fragrance and dyes (a big factor for my allergy family).

NOTE: Dessert Essence has been around for 40yrs and is a B-Corp Corporation. If you have been following me for a while you know I tend to very supportive of B-Corps. B Corps are for-profit companies certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. Social Responsibility is as important as the quality of the product in my opinion.

Desert Essence Anti-Breakage Shampoo

After practice, each of the kids used a quarter- sized amount of the Desert Essence Anti-Breakage Shampoo on their wet hair, lathered, then rinsed.

Texture: The texture of the shampoo wasn’t too thick that it gelled up in your hand and it wasn’t too runny that it would flow through your fingers into the drain.  This is honestly a pet peeve of mine that shampoos are so runny, more of it winds up washing down the drain than in my hair.

Fragrance: A big question that many of my readers have will also be the fragrance.  I had my family of 6 smell the shampoo and the feedback from all of us was a light fragrance that was a cross between minty, citrusy and floral. A closer look at the ingredients reads that it has a combination of peppermint oil, citrus oil, rose hips and bergamot… it confirmed what we all smelled. Overall, the smell was very light and pleasant.

Lather: I have to tell you, this was a personal concern of mine that the shampoo would not lather well. In the past, we have bought so many natural shampoo and it literally did not lather at all. I know… I know… bubbles are not an indication of cleanliness but I LOVE MY BUBBLES! As I mixed the Desert Anti-Breakage Shampoo with the water…beautiful foamy bubbles were created.  Ahhh…I may have sighed with joy!

Desert Essence Anti-Breakage Conditioner

With the constant exposure to the sun and chlorine, I’ve been making sure the kids remember to use conditioner. We applied the Desert Essence Aniti-Breakage Conditioner to their wet hair and massaged gently…left it on for 1 to 2 minutes, then rinsed.

Texture: The conditioner was thicker than the shampoo and it wasn’t oily or greasy, which was nice. NOTE: It rinsed pretty well, I think my kids could do it themselves without leaving residues.

Fragrance: The fragrance was similar to the shampoo.  I want to say it was a bit more citrusy but we all agreed there was more of a coconut undertone. The coconut tone makes sense since there is coconut oil and Shea butter in the conditioner (great for detangling hair).  We liked the scent, it wasn’t overwhelming like a tropical cocktail but more of a light fragrance.

Desert Essence Anti-Breakage Hair Mask

The Desert Essence Anti-Breakage Hair Mask is not a product that you are going to use on a daily bases. Use it when you can spare 20-30 min of quiet time for a deep conditioning treatment. I applied it to wet hair after using Desert Essence Anti-Breakage Shampoo. Then spread it evenly from root to tip, concentrating on the ends. Then I covered my head with a shower cap and relaxed for 20–30 minutes.  NOTE: The Desert Essence Anti-Breakage Hair Mask resulted in very manageable and soft smooth hair.  This is not an easy task, ever since I got highlights…sigh!

Texture: The hair mask is thick like frosting so it won’t be dripping down your face and scaring your husband. NOTE: As much as this mask was thick, it did rinse very well and I wasn’t standing in the shower for 20 min trying to get it out of my hair!

Fragrance: Like the other products in this line, the scent is quite light but the Desert Essence Anti-Breakage Hair Mask had more of a herbal note. The citrus note leaned more towards a ginger or sage scent.  I personally liked it but just realize that it isn’t exactly the same scent as the shampoo or conditioner.  NOTE: Once the mask is rinsed off, there is no strong scent…just a light citrus-sage scent.

Desert Essence Anti-Breakage Overall Thoughts

My hair is so swishy!

Our feelings about the Desert Essence Professional Hair Care products is that we would purchase it and use it again.  The fragrance was light and not heavy for any of the three products.  The texture of the products were spot on and was not difficult to rinse off…always a plus when it comes to children.  As my daughter says “I like it because it makes my hair swishy!” I do note that the hair mask is more for the older kids or adults because my 11yr old had no patience to sit with a shower cap for 20-30 min.  This mama will probably use the mask on her own hair when the kids are asleep. We do plan to use the 20% off online coupon code “DELovesMomsMeet to order more of the shampoo and the conditioner from desertessence.com to put in the kids swim bags for after practice.

Thank you everyone for taking the time in reading my review and happy shopping.

XXOO,

Jenny

I can imagine it being hard. The nice thing is that these products are cruelty free, paraben free and free from other items…this would be gentler on your fine hair. I hope that you do give them a try ❤
